Summersville Memorial Hospital has an 8 bed Obstetric Department and capacity for 10 newborns with 24 hour care available. Our unit is staffed with registered nurses, including those certified in inpatient obstetrics, and certified nursing assistants. Staff is certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program, CPR, and updated annually in fetal monitoring. Our unit provides pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care in cooperation with the Surgery department. The newborn nursery unit provides 24 hour per day inpatient care of "boarder babies" (infants born outside our facility).

All patients that present to Summersville Memorial Hospital for all scheduled and non-scheduled visits to the obstetrical unit and are seeking care will receive an evaluation per trained OB staff. This will include assessment of current reason for presentation to OB, establishment of maternal-fetal well-being as evidenced by electronic fetal monitoring or doppler of fetal heart tones, maternal vital signs and necessary testing as required by current condition at physician's discretion. Support services, including but not limited to clinical laboratory studies and x-rays / ultrasound will be provided to the patient in a timely manner. All necessary definitive treatment will be given to the patient within the hospital's capacity. Patients will be admitted as required and provided with services and treatments, including but not limited to assistance with labor and delivery. Staff will assist with caesarian delivery of newborn and post-operative care of mother.

Newborns will receive necessary resuscitation measures at birth and required treatments as ordered by physician.

All patients will be evaluated for response to treatment, admitted as necessary, transferred for further treatment not provided by Summersville Memorial Hospital and / or discharged with follow-up instructions as appropriate.
