Summersville
Memorial Hospital has an 8 bed Obstetric Department and capacity for
10 newborns with 24 hour care provided. Our unit is staffed
with registered nurses, including those certified in inpatient obstetrics
and certified nursing assistants. Staff is certified Neonatal Resuscitation,
CPR and are updated annually in fetal monitoring. Our unit provides pre-operative
and post-operative care in cooperation with the Surgery Department. The
newborn nursery provides 24 hour per day inpatient care not only for
infants born within our facility, but also care for "boarder babies'
(infants born outside our facility).
All patients which present to this facility for scheduled and non-scheduled
visits to the OB unit will receive an evaluation per trained OB staff.
This will include assessment of current reason for
presentation to Ob,
establishment of maternal-fetal well-being as evidenced by electronic
fetal monitoring or doppler of the fetal heart tones, maternal vital
signs, and necessary testing as required by current condition at the
physician's discretion. Support services including but not limited to
clinical laboratory studies and x-ray/ultrasound will be provided to
the patient in a timely manner. All necessary definitive treatment will
be provided to the patient within the facility's capabilities. Patients
will be admitted as required and provided with services and treatments,
including but not limited to assistance with labor and delivery. Staff
will assist with cesarean delivery of the newborn and post-operative
care of the mother.
Newborns will receive necessary resuscitation measures at birth and required
treatment as ordered by the physician.
All patients will be evaluated for response to treatment, admitted as
necessary, transferred for further treatment not provided by SMH and/or
discharged with follow-up instructions and appointments as appropriate.
